North Iceland: when to go

Summer is for whales, birds and open roads; winter for snow, aurora and quiet hot pools.

Season by season

Winter (November–March). Snow on the ground, short days and frequent aurora. Skiing above Akureyri, whales in the fjord and steaming lagoons. Highland and some coastal roads close.

Spring (April–May). Longer days, migrating birds and the first whale boats from Húsavík. Puffins return in late April. Snow lingers on passes and trails.

Summer (June–August). The main season: 24-hour daylight around the solstice, the best whale sightings, all roads open and temperatures of 10–15°C, sometimes 20°C inland.

Autumn (September–October). Autumn colours at Mývatn, the annual sheep round-ups, returning darkness and aurora, and far fewer visitors. Puffins have gone by mid-August.
