Where to base yourself
Kirkenes and Varanger (Norway). The same Barents coast, king crab and borderland history, with normal travel conditions. Our recommended substitute for Murmansk and the Kola shore.
Svalbard (Norway). For glaciers, polar bears, walrus and Soviet-era mining towns on Norwegian soil — the nearest equivalent to Franz Josef Land.
East Greenland. For remote, ship-based wilderness on the scale of the Russian archipelagos, with musk oxen and vast fjords.
Murmansk. The practical base inside Russia, with large hotels. Listed for completeness; see the advisories above.
Food & drink
The cuisine of the Russian north is built on the sea and the forest: cod, halibut, sea urchin, scallops and king crab on the Barents coast, with reindeer, mushrooms, cloudberries and lingonberries from the tundra and taiga. Pomor cooking — the tradition of the White Sea coast — features fish pies and rye pastries. You can taste much the same sea in Kirkenes and Vardø, a short distance away on the Norwegian side.
Money-saving and safety tips
- Start with official travel advice, not with tour-company marketing.
- Ask your insurer in writing whether you would be covered. In most cases, against government advice, you would not.
- Dual nationals and journalists face additional risks; several governments warn specifically about detention.
- Do not carry drones, satellite devices or detailed maps into border zones without checking the rules — on either side of the frontier.
- Consider the alternatives seriously: for most travellers they deliver the wildlife, ice and history without the complications.
- If and when conditions normalise, book only through operators with a long record in the region and transparent permit arrangements.
