The globe monument on the North Cape plateau above the Barents Sea

North Cape travel guide

Choosing a base on Magerøya, eating well in a fishing port and coping with the weather.

Where to base yourself

Honningsvåg. The only town, with hotels on the harbour, restaurants, shops and all tour departures. The practical choice, especially in winter.

Kamøyvær. A sheltered fishing village 11 km towards the Cape with brightly painted houses, a gallery and small family-run guesthouses.

Skarsvåg and Gjesvær. Tiny harbours near the plateau and the bird islands, with cabins and campsites in summer. Good for hikers and birdwatchers with a car.

Skipsfjorden. A summer-only hotel and campsites on the open tundra, roughly halfway between Honningsvåg and the Cape.

Food & drink

The Barents Sea supplies the menu: king crab, cod, halibut, coalfish and, in late winter, skrei. Several places in Honningsvåg serve king crab simply steamed with bread and mayonnaise, and you can join a tasting at a crab landing station. Reindeer, often from herds that summer on the island, appears as stew or steak. Choice is limited and kitchens close early outside the summer season, so check opening hours when you arrive.

Money-saving and safety tips

  • Clear weather matters more than the date. If your first evening is fine, go to the Cape straight away.
  • Admission to the plateau and hall is valid for 24 hours, so you can return at midnight on the same ticket — confirm this when you buy.
  • Stay behind the fences at the cliff edge; the rock is loose and gusts are sudden.
  • In winter carry warm clothing, a torch, food and a charged phone in the car, and never leave the convoy.
  • Do not approach reindeer herds or Sami camps uninvited; the animals are private property and the camps are family homes.
  • Cruise-ship calls can triple the number of people on the plateau. Evenings after the coaches leave are quieter.

Sample plans

A coastal-ship call

  1. Arrive late morning on the northbound ship
  2. Coach excursion to the plateau with time at the globe and in the hall
  3. Back on board in mid-afternoon

One night

  1. Afternoon in Honningsvåg and the North Cape Museum
  2. King crab for dinner
  3. Evening tour to the Cape for the midnight sun or the winter sky

Two days in summer

  1. Morning bird safari from Gjesvær
  2. Walk to Kirkeporten from Skarsvåg
  3. Midnight sun at the Cape
  4. Next day: hike to Knivskjellodden or visit Kamøyvær

North Cape: where to stay

Honningsvåg has only a handful of hotels and they fill when ships are in port, so book ahead for June and July. Staying in a fishing village nearer the Cape is a quieter alternative if you have a car.

North Cape: Frequently asked questions

Is North Cape really the northernmost point of Europe?

Not quite. Neighbouring Knivskjellodden reaches about 1.5 km further north, and both are on an island; the northernmost point of the mainland is Kinnarodden, further east. North Cape is the northernmost point you can drive to.

Can I visit North Cape in winter?

Yes. The road is kept open, usually by convoy on the final stretch, and tours run all winter. Expect cancellations in storms and only twilight in December and January.

When is the midnight sun?

From about 14 May to 29 July. Fog and low cloud are frequent, so allow more than one evening if seeing it matters to you.

Do I have to pay to visit?

There is a charge for the North Cape Hall and for parking at the plateau. Arrangements have changed in recent years, so check the current terms before you go.

Can I see the northern lights here?

Yes, on clear nights from September to March. The weather on this exposed coast is less reliable than inland, though, so Alta is a better aurora base.
