Kirkenes and its harbour on the Barents coast of Norway

Kirkenes travel guide

Where to sleep, what to eat besides crab, and how to behave beside an international frontier.

Where to base yourself

Kirkenes centre. The two main hotels, the square, shops and restaurants. Handy for the ship and the museum.

The Snowhotel site. Snow rooms and warm glass-roofed cabins by the fjord 10 km out, with activities starting at the door.

Pasvik and Jarfjord. Wilderness lodges and cabins in the forest or by the sea, for bear-country quiet and dark skies.

Vadsø and Vardø. Small-town hotels on the north shore of Varangerfjorden, the bases for birdwatchers and for the scenic coast road.

Food & drink

King crab dominates — steamed, in soup, or simply cracked at the table with bread and lemon. Local kitchens also serve reindeer, cod, salmon from the border rivers and cloudberries. The town’s position shows in a few Russian touches on menus and in bilingual street signs. Restaurants are few; book a table when a ship is in.

Money-saving and safety tips

  • A king crab safari costs a lot, but it includes a large meal; compare it with restaurant prices before deciding.
  • Dress for a continental winter: this is the coldest corner of the Norwegian coast.
  • Obey the border rules to the letter. Do not cross, reach or throw anything over the line, and do not photograph Russian guards or buildings.
  • Brown bears live in Pasvik. Make noise on forest paths, store food properly and keep dogs on a lead.
  • On Hornøya, stay on the marked path and never touch or feed the birds.
  • Fill the tank before driving to Vardø or Grense Jakobselv.

Kirkenes: Frequently asked questions

Can I visit Russia from Kirkenes?

Only with a Russian visa, and crossings are restricted. Most Western governments currently advise against travel to Russia. See our Russian Arctic page before making plans.

Is the Snowhotel open in summer?

Yes. It is kept frozen inside an insulated shell and can be visited or slept in all year, although the surrounding snow activities are winter-only.

Can I see the northern lights in Kirkenes?

Yes, from September to early April. The inland climate gives more clear nights than much of the coast.

Are king crabs native here?

No. They were introduced from the Pacific on the Russian side in the 1960s and spread west. Norway now manages them as a fishery in eastern Finnmark and tries to limit their spread further west.

How do I get to Vardø and Hornøya?

Drive about 250 km along Varangerfjorden, take the bus via Vadsø, or sail there on the coastal ship. The Hornøya boat leaves from Vardø harbour in season.
